Architecture, Colors, and Sunshine: Beautiful Marrakech

We absolutely loved the sunshine, colors, and architecture of Marrakech.  There is a crazy hustle and bustle - with a quiet calm in the romantic riads and beautiful mountains.  If you have the opportunity - go!  We had the best time and made wonderful memories.  The place is so bright and intricate - it's hard to take a bad picture - be ready for a few posts of our favorites!

Beautiful minaret of the main mosque:

Perfect symmetry of Bahia Palace:

If You Go: Marrakech

We loved Marrakech!  We saw amazing sites, took in beautiful architecture, rode camels, and ate delicious Moroccan food.  We highly recommend all of the things below - we had a great trip and hope you will too:

Hotel
Riad Al Badia: Of every hotel we have stayed at this year, this was my absolute favorite.  The 6 room riad was beautiful - a courtyard with a pool, delicious breakfast, and comfortable rooms.  Even better - the staff who run the riad are just incredible - they took care of absolutely everything from transport to reservations to taxi planning.  The staff went above and beyond!

Restaurants
Nomad: This was my favorite of our dinners out!  The terrace is stunning, the view is amazing, and the vibe is modern and hip.  Book reservations early!
Al Fassia: This is a restaurant chain run entirely by women.  The food is delicious, the service was impeccable, and the environment was neat.  Recommend
Comptoir Darna: This was a bit overpriced, but had a belly dancing show and very hip vibe.  The belly dancers were a bit strip club-ish, but it was definitely a scene
Naranj: We came here twice - once for lunch and once for dinner.  The food was Lebanese and delicious -- I preferred lunch to dinner!

Things To Do
Below are the tours and activities we did that were a bit off the beaten path or optional...highly recommend all of them (in addition to all of the regular tourist spots!)

  • Atlas Tour - 4x4 Camel: This was a beautiful day trip into the Atlas mountain.  It included a visit to a local market, an argan oil factory, and a stunning meal on a terrace overlooking the mountains.  Most importantly...a camel ride!!!  Highly recommend
  • Chef Tarik Cooking School: This was a half day cooking class out in a village on an organic farm.  We learned to make 3 salads and 3 tagines...they were incredible and the techniques were easy enough to use at home.  It was a lovely farm, great view, and delicious food.  Highly Recommend!
  • Secret Garden: This is a beautiful new spot in Marrakech.  For an entry fee, you get access to some beautiful, tranquil and peaceful gardens.  We went toward the end of the day and had a spectacular time.
  • LaHindra: We went to this spot to buy a rug.  Both in Turkey and Morocco, we did some research before buying a carpet to make sure we dealt with reputable rug spots.  LaHindra had great reviews and beautiful rugs - they even have an Instagram account you can review before you make the leap.  Not the cheapest spot, but the rugs seemed pretty real and the prices were reasonable (very minimal haggling)

London Calling...Again!

We continue to book these crazy cheap $5 train fares to see London on different weekends.  These trips are a wonderful way to see the city in all of its seasons and not get overwhelmed by the many things to visit.  For us, the list keeps growing! For this trip, we trained down on a Friday night, spent Saturday exploring, and then Sunday I left for a work trip and P kept exploring.  We updated our running London blog post with our latest recommendations for hotels, restaurants, and things to do - so definitely follow along there.

A quick recap of the highlights of this trip:

  • Guided Tour of Parliament: It was fascinating to hear how their system worked, get some colorful commentary about their democratic system, and see the beautiful spaces of the House of Commons and the House of Lords.  Highly Recommend!
  • Banqueting Hall at White Hall: If you watch the television show The Tudors - you hear a lot about Whitehall Palace.  Most of the Palace burned down in the 1600s, but one hall remains - the beautiful banqueting hall.  It contains some stunning Rubens canvases on the ceiling and is filled with beanbags for comfortable view!
  • Westminster Abbey: Amazing to see in-person what I have seen so many times in television and movies - the coronations and the weddings!  What surprised us...most of the tour is focused on all of the people buried there.  From kings and queeens...to Poets Corner where many of the greatest English writers are memorialized
  • Liberty London: My favorite Department store in the world.  Such an incredible treat to spend time there - poking through their beautiful bags, stationary, and jewelry...not our first stop there and hopefully not our last!

So here are the snaps!

Woke up to a beautiful blue sky over Big Ben!

Caught beautiful shadows on the walls of Westminster Abbey

Some of the beautiful stained glass:

Whitehall Banqueting Room... you can see the beanbags in the background and a mirror showing the amazing ceiling in the foreground

P takes a look at the ceiling in the mirror :)

We caught an incredible sunset over the London Eye

Maybe a little treat?

We <3 London so much!
