Sunshine over Stockholm

A few snaps of a funny few days in Stockholm.  We loved our trip !

Beautiful colored houses

The scale of the Vasa is tough to capture in a single photograph...but check out how many floors you have to climb to see the top deck.

Stockholm, you rock!

If You Go: Stockholm

We loved our summer trip to Stockholm.  We had perfect weather - clear skies and high 60s.  The city is almost entirely on the water (Sweden is actually an archipelago of 30,000 islands...Stockholm is made up of dozens of little islands).  A few things to know before you go:

  • Buy the Stockholm Pass: Buy it before you go if you plan to see many of the attractions, it covers multiple boat and bus tours...every museum...palaces.  Anything you would want to see as a tourist.  It's pricey, but worth it.
  • Prepare to Splurge: Stockholm is a very expensive place...comparable to Geneva or Copenhagen.  Brace yourself a bit for the prices - food, transportation, and shopping were expensive.
  • Eat Cinnamon Buns: Seriously ate two a day.  Cinnamon Capital of the world.
With all of that..for us, the trip was totally worth it!  Highly recommend.

Hotels
Hotel at Six: This hotel had just opened when we arrived.  It's a five star hotel in the center of town.  It's very hip and modern....walkable to just about everything and next to a mall that has every amenity you could imagine (including snacks!).  Highly, highly recommend this hotel ($225/night)

Restaurants
Brod and Salt: If you take none of my recommendations, you MUST come here.  Best cinnamon buns, hands down. There are Brod and Salts all over the city, but try the one that is the central bakery.  They cook thousands of cinnamon buns every day.  Such an amazing spot.

Oexen: This is a modern restaurant not far from the Vasa Museum.  They have a very fancy restaurant and then a more casual bistro.  The bistro had great food (at reasonable, DC prices).  Great views of the water and a diverse menu.  Highly recommend - reservations are a must.
Nytorget 6: We had reservations here our first night.  It's a bit out of the way in a residential area, but it's clear that the Swedes eat here as a local spot.  Our food was fantastic - I had the steak and P had the Swedish meatballs ;-)  We also had a couple of delicious appetizers.  Definitely recommend - reservations are a must here.

Things to Do
Vasa Museum: Perhaps the most famous museum in Stockholm, this features a boat that sunk 300 years ago and was pulled up from the bottom of the ocean in the 1950s.  Perfectly preserved because of the cold, Baltic sea - you can see the clothes, jewels, and the ship itself.  Recommend
Drottningholm Palace: If you have a half day, I highly, highly recommend the boat ride and visit to this summer palace.  The inside is nice (but not the nicest we have seen)...but the gardens are stunning and the views of the palace over the water are really unbelievable.  Highly recommend if you have at least a half a day.
Royal Palace: The joy of Stockholm is that it's not filled to the brim with tourists...the palace was no different.  We got to enjoy a nearly empty palace, take cool photos, and generally look around!  Recommend
Nobel Museum: A museum dedicated to the various Nobel winners.  Interesting to hear all the history of the award and its winners.  You can see the whole museum in under an hour...but an interesting shot to visit.

Scottish Double Rainbow

My northeast road trip with Christine was dreamy!  Filled with sunshine, rainbows, beaches, castles, shopping, and coffee...it was everything fun.  Check out my full "if you go" for details on what we did and where to stay...but below are a few of my most favorite shots from the trip:

First stop...the beach for a seaglass hunt:

Next stop...Alnwick Castle:

Beautiful garden...

Stopped for a cappuccino at the largest treehouse in the UK!

...and checked out the incredible Barter Books (a secondhand bookship in a converted train station!)

Capped the day off with a double rainbow over the Scottish coast...

Good morning to the Britannia Yacht in Edinburgh:

Finally...a sunny (kinda!) day in Scotland:

If You Go: Northeast Roadtrip!

When my friend Christine booked her trip with reward miles, she flew into Leeds and out of Edinburgh.  This provided the most perfect excuse for a Northeast roadtrip.  We managed to pack in castles, crazy seafood, and extensive shopping in just 48 hours.  For friends who are local, this was a great itinerary and fun few days!

Day 1 - Northeast Coast

  • Seaham Beach: Known for its seaglass, the beach is super pebbly and if you dig just a bit there are shards of sea glass to harvest.  Apparently a century ago there was a bottle factory not far from the beach.  A great morning!
  • Alnwick Castle: Famous for being the site of Harry Potter's castle in movies 1+2, Alnwick is exactly what you think a castle should look like!  For kids, it has a Quidditch pitch and its garden is stunning...and includes the Poison Garden (which shows up on every crazy garden list).  After you're finished with  your visit, stop by the Tree House for a coffee...the largest in the UK (maybe Europe!)
  • Barter Books: This is an old train station that has been converted into an incredible used book store.  If you have a kid who is into trains (my brother was!) - this is the perfect place to visit and find some inspiration to read.
  • Marshall Meadow Country House: Adorable hotel along the coast.  The northernmost hotel in England, you can stroll to the border of Scotland within a 10 minute walk.  The restaurant here is unbelievable...you MUST order the seafood platter.  My biggest regret was not having my phone with me to snap a photo of this incredible food!

Day 2 - Edinburgh

  • Britannia: The Queen's Yacht from 1953 - 1997, the tour allows visitors to see the famous state rooms, the navigation rooms, and the sailor's quarters.  It was really amazing to see this...especially after seeing other palaces like Buckingham and Windsor.  A true floating palace!
  • Edinburgh Castle: P and I had visited before, but we had a great visit with much better weather this round.  Amazing history and always great to see the crown jewels.
  • Marchbrae: This is where I got the original gifts from Edinburgh, which Christine loved...soo we went back to visit.  I came home with a new Harris Tweed Coat for Alfie + lots of fun scarves for gifts.  Love this shop!
  • Apex Grassmarket: Love the Apex hotel brand so much...this one did not disappoint!  In addition to giving us a nice big room with two beds, we also were upgraded to a castle view room.  Walking distance to the best boutique shopping, this was a great spot for a night!

Pride and Prejudice Live: Chatsworth

When my lovely friend Christine visited, her #1 priority (besides seeing me!) was visiting Chatsworth House.  Famous as the film spot for Pride + Prejudice...and a special location for Downton Abby, it lived up to every expectation.  The gardens were designed by famed British landscape architect Capability Brown and were so perfectly lush.  The house was filled with a fashion exhibit and the tea was exquisite.  More on the tea...it is a partnership with Wedgewood and is served on all Wedgewood china, so in addition to being delicious, it was also stunning.

If you're local, you must visit - this was one of my most favorite local adventures!  Well worth the drive (a little under 2 hours):

Cloudy, but not rainy at the house:

The gardens were so lush and perfectly designed...I think they are my most favorites I have visited (except Tulips in Netherlands):

The maze:

Stunning colors:

Lush and green...

Tree-lined lanes:

Inside the house was a fashion exhibit including robes worn to the Queen's coronation:

The rest of the house was also beautifully maintained:

Wedgewood Tea...Squee!

Because LONDON is always a good idea...

Summer in London is the best.  Great weather, lots of sunshine, and flowers in bloom.  We took another short trip to London for two quick days to see Harry Potter and visit Windsor Castle.  It was another amazing trip to one of my favorite cities in the world.  Here are a few of our snaps:

We love the view outside our hotel:

Destination Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik exceeded every expectation we had!  We expected it to be inauthentic, filled with tourists, and a bit Disney-fied.  What we found was a stunningly beautiful city, incredible views, and a lot of Game of Thrones scenes.  We were all happy with this as the final stop.  It was crazy hot, but having an amazing hotel in the center of town allowed us to cool off throughout the day and avoid the cruise ship crush when we needed to.
